Wanted (Dead or Alive): Suspense Thriller Authors
Suspense/Thriller authors are in all likelihood among the highest paid and more pampered in the publishing industry today. The reason for this is that the film and television industry is hungry for best-selling suspense thrillers that can be adapted into screenplays and television scripts. The Suspense/Thriller genre is what continually satisfies their hunger. This genre is the main supplier of high-concept material that eventually gets produced into high rating television shows and blockbuster movies.
Since Suspense/Thriller authors get paid the big bucks and garner all the attention, they are expected to deliver in a big way by writing high-concept, quick-paced, nonstop action packed stories that will keep readers at the edge of their seats and biting their nails. Really, they are under a lot of pressure because their next book has to be even more action-packed, innovative, and riveting than their last. There can never be a dull moment and they must keep the reader interested page after page, from beginning to end. A Suspense/Thriller author must also be a career writer and not a one hit wonder. If taken on by a publisher, he or she will be expected to come out with a new book every 9 to 18 months. This is not an easy thing to do so when a talented suspense thriller writer comes along, literary agents and editors will take notice.
A literary agent with a well-enough trained eye can spot a talented suspense thriller writer within the first few pages of a manuscript. This is precisely the way it happened when I first read The Industry written by a twenty-year-old Australian student named Rose Foster. The first thing that caught my eye about this project was the unique concept.
Sixteen-year-old Kirra Hayward unknowningly submits a correct answer to what she assumes is a harmless online puzzle one afternoon. A week later she is abducted on her way home from school and dragged from her lonely lifestyle to become the captive of a dangerous international organization operated by the calm and calculating Latham.
The idea of a teenaged expert code cracker being held against her will by a shadowy crime syndicate and forced to use her newfound talent for evil appealed to me right away. The concept was really good, but the writing even better. I wasn't about to let the fact that the author lived a whole continent away stop me from signing her up. About a month after I started shopping around The Industry
to foreign and domestic publishing houses, Lisa Berryman/Associate Publisher of HarperCollins Australia offered to buy all three books in the series. She had grown weary of all the paranormal and fantasy YA novels and was ready for an exciting and dangerous change of pace. The Industry
, the first book of this amazing, heart-pounding series which was released in April of 2012, has already caught the eye of not one but two movie producers.
